Medical Procedure – What to expect

Medical Procedure: what to expect

Taking the stress out of surgery

We are here to make this run as smoothly as possible. Our highly experienced staff will be with you every step of the way ensuring your pet receives the safest most comprehensive surgical care.

To reduce the risk of vomiting or regurgitation under the anaesthetic your pet must fast prior to their procedure. Food must not be offered after midnight on the night before their procedure but they should have free access to water at all times (unless specifically instructed otherwise by your vet).

Dogs: Please ensure that your dog is taken for a short, lead-only walk in the morning so that their bowels and bladder may be emptied. Please ensure your dog remains clean. Cats: to ensure that cats have fasted, please lock all cat flaps and keep your cat indoors the night prior to the surgery.

Initially you will be greeted by one of our surgical nurses that will be monitoring your pet throughout the day. You will be able to discuss any last minute concerns you may have. The surgical nurse will discuss if a pre anesthetic blood test or operative fluid support is advisable, discuss pain relief and go through the important admission form checklist.

We carry a variety of anaesthetic regimes to suit all patients, from young to old. Anaesthesia monitoring equipment includes CO2 monitoring, pulse oximetry, Doppler ultrasound blood pressure monitoring, ECG and for more challenging cases, a ventilator. Most importantly, we have fully qualified nurses to ensure that all our high-tech machinery is functioning correctly and supporting your pet Your pet will be examined and a pre-medication injection will be given based on breed, age and health. This will provide pre-emptive pain relief and sedate your pet to reduce stress and the amount of subsequent anaesthetics required.

Your pet will receive the same safe intravenous anaesthetic drug you would receive in hospital. This is administered via a vein of the foreleg or through a catheter if intravenous fluids are to be given. A tube is then gently placed in the airway so an anaesthetic gas can be inhaled. This allows more precise control of anaesthetic depth. The patient is then clipped and cleaned in our preparation room before transfer to one of our two sterile surgical suites.

We have the best equipment that allows us to monitor anaesthetics at a high standard for optimal patient safety. We routinely measure blood oxygen levels, heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, ECG patterns, core body temperature and even the amount of carbon dioxide in the air exhaled by the patient (Capnography). We also rely on our skilled nurses to be constantly evaluating and charting the patients status throughout their procedure.

Electrosurgery involves using a high frequency alternating electric current to either cut, fulgurate, dissect, ablate, or coagulate tissue. We routinely use electrosurgery equipment with a fine tipped pen for pin point control of bleeding. This reduces blood loss and pain for your pet.

During most surgeries blood pressure is supported with intravenous fluids given at a carefully controlled rate with an infusion pump. We routinely use our pumps so fluids and intravenous pain relief can easily be continued after surgery as well.

Our small Veterinary patients are very prone to dangerous body temperature drops during surgery which can increase complication rates. Due to the importance of this, we have invested in the latest warming technology for the pets under our care. Patients at our Clinic will be warmed during their procedure whether surgical, dental or imaging

Having perfectly sterile surgical instruments, drapes and gowns is critical to successful outcomes especially with advanced surgery and orthopaedics. We have invested in the best with our large hospital grade autoclave. All of our surgical packs have monitoring strips to ensure every pack is entirely sterile throughout. Our autoclave is also monitored with its own onboard digital software to ensure perfect performance and is professionally calibrated annually.

The surgery isn't over when the anaesthetic is turned off. Evaluations of comfort, warmth, toileting and general wellbeing continue throughout the day by our trained Nurses. Pain control is important to us and we individualise pain relief from a local anaesthetic through to an adjustable constant flow of pain relief intravenously ("pain pump"). Warmth after surgery is also critical for a good recovery. Our hospital cages are insulated to reflect warmth and all pets get covered in polar fleece blankets and have dry beds to lie on. For those with extra needs we use warmth to raise their core temperature to normal. Each evening cages and surfaces are sterilised so the surgery, hospital and consultation rooms are ready for a new days challenges.

When you return to collect your pet you are understandably focused on seeing them again so it is not surprising that it is hard to recall what the Vet or Nurse have advised you about your pet's home care after surgery. This is why we feel it is crucial that pet parents receive a written report when taking their pets home from the hospital or surgery departments. The report will be individualised to your pet with your responsibilities for home care clearly outlined to ensure a rapid and comfortable recovery. For hospital cases you will receive regular updates on your pets condition. Progress checks will often be required and our team will indicate when these are due.

We invest in five-star equipment and a top quality team.
Your pets safety in surgery is our priority.
